my new favorite weekender

A sneak peek of what's to come on La Mercerie! This pattern will be available through La Mercerie as part of our opening line up! The kit will include the printed pattern, as well as all the hardware and interfacing required. You just have to pick your fabric and you're set!

I've been on the search for a good weekender bag for ages. They just always seem to be too big, too small, too expensive, too patterned...it never seems to be quite what I'm looking for. I'm probably just too picky. But when I saw this pattern for the Carpet Bag by Sew Liberated, I knew it could be just what I've been looking for. And of course, then the search for just the right fabric began...after buying the pattern a couple months ago, I finally got to sew this bag up last weekend.

I love the structure of this bag. It has an aluminum frame sewn into the top that holds it open for easy packing (as well as keeps it closed when you're traveling) and the stiff bottom helps the bag hold its shape. Plus, this thing holds a lot of stuff. It's the perfect size for an overnight bag or weekend getaway...I've easily packed a couple days worth of clothing, all my toiletries, a pair of heels, and a couple magazines to read. It's going to be perfect for holding all my books and knitting for next week's road trip!

The pattern was easy to follow and came together quickly. The handles require quite a few layers of fabric and looking back, I wish I had used a walking foot on my machine. Oh well, hindsight's 20/20, right? Other than that, the directions were straightforward and I was able to finish the bag in an evening. Even though our road trip is still a week away, I'm ready to start packing and get on the road!
